At the Acropolis and Other Greecian Delights

Nashville, Tennessee

In celebration of my 60th birthday (2007) our two daughters sent their mother and me to Greece for 8 days. Notwithstanding that I am a paraplegic, Europe is not very "accessible" generally and Greece has its own particular barriers, the experience was extraordinary. Because our trip was a relatively short one we knew that we needed to hit the ground running and we did. We arrived in Athens from Kennedy mid-morning Thursday October 18, going immediately to our hotel, the Athens Atrium Hotel & Suites, a boutique shop, quite comfortable and of medium cost. It would function as our Athens HQ for our first three days on the peninsula.
Upon check in we consulted with the desk clerk/concierge, determined the location of the Acropolis, queried whether taxi or mass transit was the better option from where we were, decided on the latter when we discovered the subway was only 2 blocks away, then "raced" upstairs to our room. As soon as we could put down our bags (we forestalled unpacking until our return) we took off for the subway, rode three stops before exiting at the Acropolis Station, with the real fun beginning here.

Jazz in Nashville, TN

Nashville, Tennessee

When one thinks of Nashville, jazz is probably not at the top of the list. But Music City, as Nashville is affectionately known, has a vibrant jazz scene, with a diversity of styles being played by some of the best musicians in the world, many of whom have made Nashville their home.

At the top of the list is F. Scott's Restaurant and Jazz Bar in the Green Hills area which features great food and live jazz six nights a week. Another great place to see live jazz is in the Germantown neighborhood at the "Jazz Cave" inside the Nashville Jazz Workshop, which features national artists such as Kenny Barron and Houston Person, as well a monthly contemporary jazz series. They also host a monthly "Jazz On The Move" series at the Frist Museum for the Visual Arts.

There are a number of other venues where you can see live jazz on any given night during the week such as the French Quarter Cafe in East Nashville, home of the Read More

My Nashville

Nashville, Tennessee

To many, Nashville is known as the Music City, the unofficial honky-tonk capital of the world but it is so much more than that. It often surprises to initial visitors to find a chic American city, scintillating skyscrapers, and a healthy financial community, embracing new commerce, publishing houses and other offshoots of the music industry.

Located in the center of Middle Tennessee, Nashville is the flourishing city of the upper South, where gracious Southern hospitality mixes with a genuine friendliness. The population is rapidly expanding as it attracts citizens escaping the brutal northern winters, or leaving New York and Los Angeles for a more easy-going lifestyle. Being a transplant from the wintry conditions of Chicago, I was definitely drawn in by the climate and surrounding proximities to other urban locales was also a major plus. The city is strategically positioned at the convergence of three major interstates and at the center of various surrounding travel destinations.

Nashville also prides itself on its education. Boasting over 20 plus schools in the area, it is home to a triad of historical black colleges/universities: Tennessee State University, Meharry Medical College and last but definitely not least, my alma mater, …
